well, technically he killed the guy because of the freaked up eye from cataracs or something.

also, the dude was the old man's butler. he could have been forced to stay because of the microscopic list of jobs available at the time. also, he said that he liked the old man as a person....... come to think of it, he could have just bought the old man an eye patch and explained that his eye is freaking him out. I'm sure he would've understood.
